How is it diagnosed?
MDS is diagnosedby carrying out blood tests and bone marrow tests. Blood tests will show how many normal and abnormal blood cells you have.
A bone marrow test is done under local anaesthetic , which is injectedinto the area behind your hip bone.Thedoctor then passes a needle through your skin and into your bone, drawing out a sample of your bone marrow into a syringe. This will be sent to a laboratory to be examined under a microscope.
The bone marrow test takes 15-20 minutes and can be done on the ward or in the outpatients department.
