Introduction

Appendicitis is the inflammation of the small intestine, where it meets the colon (in fact, it is a rudimentary extension of the gut, the function of which is yet unknown).

What causes acute appendicitis?

Acute appendicitis can be caused by:

  • The blockage of the lumen (space inside the gut) of the gut by feces
  • Blockage due to inflammation of the lymph nodes around the appendix area, which respond to infections of the abdomen, or respiratory system organs
  • Obstruction due to worms
  • Obstruction due to trauma
  • Obstruction due to tumors

However, the precise cause of this condition remains unknown, which is why appendicitis cannot be prevented.

If the appendix swells, it may burst and release the fecal material in the abdominal cavity, it causes peritonitis (inflammation of the membrane lining the abdominal wall). This is a severe condition, and constitutes a medical emergency.
